Extinction, Matt Blair Föbel, 2020

Hopeless would be an accurate word to describe how I envision the current environment and climate change situation. Personally, thinking about the impending doom that is quickly approaching and how fragile ecosystems are, is quite overwhelming. Plastic is becoming a part of our biology and severely impacting wildlife. Thousands of birds and aquatic life die every day due to the amount of plastic in our environment. I believe that when humans go extinct, nature will come back and thrive. My piece depicts a dog, two birds, and a baby surrounded by a world created entirely of plastic. To the dog, the birds and the baby, the plastic landscape is a normal occurrence. The innocence of the animals and the baby is sad and their entire existence is surrounded by the outcome of our species’ preventable wrongdoing. It demonstrates that even when humans are gone, our effects will last far beyond our own existence.
